Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, was born within Long Beach California. Her aunt Denise helped her develop a love for artwork and inspiration. The aunt she had was a nurse working night shifts to ensure that she could dedicate her time to writing, reading, theater and other interests. DuVernay enjoyed the film West Side Story, which she showed her. DuVernay was taught by her that art could be a vehicle for activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was socially aware and showed her how to use art as a method of expressing herself. DuVernay was raised living with family members in Compton she spent every summer in Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. DuVernay's father remembered watching the Civil Rights movement's historic march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in close proximity to Selma Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama was the inspiration she used to produce a film on Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. In the year 1990, DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. She enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles where she earned degrees in English along with African American Studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. DuVernay began her career as an intern for CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being given duty of looking after the residence and scrutinizing the waste of one of jurors. In the aftermath of being dissatisfied in journalistic work by the assignments she was given, DuVernay decided to pursue a career in publicity. DuVernay began her professional career as a junior public relations assistant at a small film studio following her graduation from the college. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. The agency has launched a wide range of promotion and lifestyle networks, including Urban Beauty Collective and Urban Eye.
